Overview
The BambooHR connector lets admins in Firstbase Workflows to reference employee information to trigger events directly in Firstbase.
Common Use Cases Include:
- Reference employee type to create separate onboarding and offboarding experience for contractors, interns, and FTEs.
- Use manager data to involve hiring managers in the hardware selection process.
- Merge BambooHR data & Firstbase data to keep other internal systems up to date.
Connection Overview
BambooHR API Key:
This connector uses a BambooHR API key which is the standard mechanism BambooHR provides for direct, system-to-system API integrations.
To connect to BambooHR, you will need:
- Your BambooHR Subdomain (https://<mycompany>.bamboohr.com)
- A BambooHR API Key
BambooHR API keys are generated per-user and inherit that user's own permissions in BambooHR. Because of that, Firstbase recommends generating the API key from a dedicated integration rather than a specific team member's personal BambooHR login. An integration tied to one employee's personal account breaks when they leave, and is harder to scope permissions than on a purpose-built integration account.
Integration User Setup
Step 1 – Create a Custom Access Level
To create an integration user, a BambooHR administrator will go to Settings -> Access Levels. Next to Level, click the + button to create a “Custom Access Level”.
Add a name in basic info and click “Next Step”. Skip “What this Access Level Can Do”.
Under “What this Access Level Can See”-> “See About Other Employees”, add read only to the recommended scopes below:
| Personal | Only Employee #, Status, First Name, and Last Name under Basic info and then all of Address and Contact. |
| Job | Hire Date, Direct Reports, Team, All of Employment Status and Job Information |
| Assets | All |
Click “Save & Finish”
Step 2 – Create a Non-Employee User
Click into the newly created access level. At the right, click the cog, and then “Add a New Non-Employee User”.
Add a “First Name” and “Last Name” and then add a dedicated integration email.
Step 3 – Create Password & Login
An invite will be sent to the integration email inbox. Finalize setup by setting a password.
Generate an API Key
Step 1 – Find your BambooHR API Key
Click on My Account -> API Keys. Click “New API Key”. Add an API Key Name. Copy the Key and store it somewhere safe. You will not be able to see the Key again after close the window.
Step 2 –Create a New Key
Click “New API Key”. Add an API Key Name. Copy the Key and store it somewhere safe. You will not be able to see the Key again after close the window.
